Cats Get Angry… Crush LSU 74-50

To say Anthony Davis took a beating today would be an understatement.  I thought we had lost him for the season on more than one occasion, but instead, got up off the floor and continued to make LSU wish they had taken him out.  Kentucky had a scare in the first half (when Davis was off the floor) but responded by quickly turning the game into a one sided affair.  LSU is a much improved team over last year, but they played most of the game like they knew they had no chance.

The 74-50 final is one of the biggest margins of victory Kentucky has had on the road in several games, and they did it by being tough and not backing down.  Terrence Jones had a season high 27 points and made his presence known throughout the entire game.  Davis added 16 points himself, and as always, most of those were dunks.  The only other Cat in double figures was Darius Miller, who is beginning to show the consistency needed from the lone senior (that plays).

Kentucky did a great job on the boards today, out rebounding LSU 36-26.  Anthony Davis led the team with 10 rebounds, completing his 11th double double of the season.  Davis and Jones had 3 blocks each, and get this… Marquis Teague had UK’s other two blocks from the game.

Teague did another good job of controlling the game.  He knocked down 2 threes to get his only points in the game, but managed the floor well getting 4 assists to only 1 turnover.

The Wildcats are making their way through a somewhat soft spot in the schedule, but seem to be doing what is necessary to prepare themselves for March.  It’s clear that this team’s identity is none other than Anthony Davis.  The Cats seem to hit the panic button briefly in the first half when Davis went down and it was unclear if he could return.  Eloy Vargas has shown the ability to come in and give Kentucky quality minutes in Davis’ absence, but has not been very impressive of late in very limited action.  It’s a slippery slope for Vargas because one has to think that if he were to see more playing time now, he may get more comfortable to handle crucial game time late in the season.

There’ll be no question who is number one in the polls next week, but things will start to pick up quickly for the Cats.  Tennessee comes to town on Tuesday in the highly anticipated platinum uniform game, then its to South Carolina, before the Florida Gators come to town on February 7th, unofficially getting the difficult part of the season underway.
