Good morning loyal readers—I hope your morning is proceedingly swimmingly and Monday didn’t kill you. Not literally, mind you, but metaphorically. I’d feel pretty guilty if some tragedy had befallen you, especially with all things Kentucky going so well. Pardon me for quoting that really bad Aerosmith song in Armaggedon, but you don’t want to close your eyes and you don’t want to miss a thing. The Wildcats were a unanimous #1 in all major poles. The Lady Wildcats remained #6, but with Duke losing last night to the Lady Huskies and Geno Areola Aurielle Auriemma, there’s a good chance they’ll move even higher assuming Coach Matthew Mitchell’s SEC-leading ladies don’t trip up this week. It’s going to be 65 degrees in Central Kentucky today. Even though evidence continues to support those stupid Mayans might be right, we can’t let little things like end-of-the-world predictions distract us. Eyes on the national championship prize, Big Blue Nation. My plea to the Mayan gods of global destruction is this: let me at least enjoy Bourbon Street for the SEC tournament. I’m locked, loaded, and I’ve got more beads than a party supply store. Thanks for listening. I’m not asking for much.
Morning Thoughts—NOW…
Kentucky vs. Tennessee: The Wildcats are a 16.5 point favorite over Skyler McBee’s mustache and Jarnell Stokes’ size 20 shoes tonight in Rupp. Tip-off is at 7pm. Thank God. 9pm tip-offs kick my ass. I need naps and coffee to stay awake until 9pm on week nights. I’m most interested in watching Terrence Jones tonight. Will he continue the pre-season All-American form he rediscovered in Baton Rouge on Saturday? Or was that a freak occurrence? As Tony pointed out yesterday, an average Jones makes Kentucky very good. An All-American Jones makes Kentucky an almost impossible “out” come March and April. I don’t expect Tennessee to come out hot as they did in Knoxville and I do expect UK to win. That’s what happens when you’re on the road. Welcome to Lexington, Volunteers.
Khalid Henderson: lots of reports the four star linebacker from Georgia commited to Kentucky last night. Per Twitter, he won’t officially announce until tomorrow’s National Signing Day. If Coach Tee can close the deal, this is a HUGE pickup. Kentucky’s football program doesn’t typically sign four star linebackers that aren’t from the state of Kentucky. Micah Johnson was the last linebacker Kentucky grabbed that was rated as highly as Henderson. That being said, National Signing Day is NEVER a sure thing. Until he puts on the UK hat and signs the Letter of Intent, don’t break out the bubbly. Trust me, I’ll be leading the celebration charge afterwards. Matt Roark Shots for all!
Jaylen Whitlow: in typical Tee Martin fashion, the dual-threat quarterback from Alabama picked up a late scholarship offer from General Joker. Whitlow is currently commited to Arkansas State (why?????) and picked up another late offer from Ole Miss. He’s never visited Lexington, which never really helps get commitments. Is it me, or is Ole Miss recruit-blocking UK for every single player left available? Go away, Oxford. I hear the new J. Crew catalog is out. Go read that or something. Let UK finish off this class. Tee and Joker don’t need another wing man squashing their game.
Ryan Harrow: in yesterday’s teleconference, Coach Cal described Harrow as a combination of Brandon Knight and Marquis Teague. His shot is better than Teague’s, but he’s not as physical as Knight. You know what? I’ll take that. Teague’s improving every game, and if he does return to UK for his sophomore year, a backcourt with he and Harrow is downright scary. Don’t ask me if I know anything about whether Teague is returning for his sophomore year. I don’t know and, frankly, right now I don’t care. Let’s just enjoy this season and let next season take care of itself. Cool?
On a side note—that Blake Griffin can really dunk. If you haven’t seen what he did last night, don’t worry. You will.
