Morning Thoughts–UK Ruled The Weekend Edition

Some weekends are just what they’re supposed to be.  You spend time with your family.  You relax.  You take naps.  You take your children to Gattitown.  You go to Gattitown with your fellow immature older friends.  You play XBox or Playstation 3 until your eyes become so red it looks like you’ve been in an Amsterdam hash bar.  You might even decide to catch up on that report for work you’ve been dreading more than a Jimmy Dykes class in college basketball color commentary.  Though UKSI does not condone working on the weekend, some times, it is permissible.

Then, there are other weekends like the one Big Blue Nation just enjoyed.  Our beloved men and women in blue stormed basketball courts like the beaches of Normandy and came out victorious.  The men’s team survived multiple mugging attempts and misdemeanor assualts in route to an LSU thrashing in Baton Rouge.  The ladies once again held court in Memorial Colesium, turning back the Crimson Tide yesterday for another victory in front of the third straight sell out crowd.  These are the kind of weekends I live for.  I’m sure your feel the same.   To go back to this morning’s title, UK ruled this weekend.

What else do I think I about it?  You’ve come this far, so keep on reading:

Are the #1 Wildcats Starting to “Get It”?  Whether it was the re-emergence of Terrence Jones, the Sixth Man swagger of Darius Miller, or the steady play of Marquis Teague, this team seems to be finding it’s groove.  LSU did everything in their power to bump UK around—including ejections and cheap shots—and, obviously, it didn’t work.  While BBN will continue to nitpick everything (because that’s just what we do), it’s fair to say this team has improved over the past two weeks.  What’s scary is, they can still get better.  I still don’t see UK running the table in the SEC.  Tough road games to Vanderbilt’s funky gym, Mississippi State’s cattle show, and Florida’s reptile lair will probably produce at least one loss and more likely two.  As Coach Cal has said numerous times, as long as UK is peaking in March, that’s all that matters.

The Lady Wildcats Continue to Get It Done: Matt’s Cats held off an Alabama rally yesterday to get the win 82-68.  The lead was as large as 25 and UK was never really threatened.  Though Coach Matthew Mitchell wasn’t pleased with how his team played in the second half, the Lady Kats stayed undefeated in SEC play.  UK will stay #6 in the country.  Someone in front of them needs to lose.  Any takers?  Step right up.  The Lady Kats continue to have a one game lead over Tennessee, who spanked the Lady Bulldogs from Georgia last night.  Thanks a lot, Georgia.  You’re sleeping outside tonight.

National Signing Day:  It appears Monty “Funky Cold” Madaris did NOT make the trip to Lexington this weekend.  Was it something Aaron Boyd said?  In fact, he commited to Michigan State last night (per Bleed Blue Kentucky).  General Joker is now 0 for 2 on late signings after Imani Cross said yes to Nebraska.   Four star linebacker Khalid Henderson did make the trip Lexington this weekend, spending time with Danny Trevathan and hearing UK’s pitch.  It’s looking more and more like Henderson is UK’s best chance to make a big splash on National Signing Day.  He’s down to UK and Ole Miss.  I can’t make fun of Ole Miss anymore.  I don’t have anything witty and sarcastic to say left in the tank.

Royce White:  sure would’ve been nice to see Royce White in Lexington instead of in Ames, Iowa.  Serious question—where the hell is Ames, Iowa?  Not even Siri on my iPhone could find it.  Anyway, if White was playing for Kentucky or a high-major program like North Carolina, he’d be in contention for Player of the Year.  Unfortunately, no one knows where Iowa State actually is.  Hard to get press when you can’t be found.  White led the Cyclones in an upset over Kansas on Saturday.

Pac-10 Basketball:  do they still play basketball out there?  Again, this is a serious question.  As of today, the only team guaranteed to get a March Madness is the conference champion.  The conference won’t get another invite because, frankly, they all suck.  Thanks for contributing to the suckness, UCLA.  Are you listening, Shabazz Muhammed?

That’ll do it for today everybody.  Follow me on Twitter @drewuksportsinf.  Have a good one.
