Tomorrow is signing day, but the day before UK got a glimpse of where we stand in the SEC and in football in general.
Jalen Whitlow, a 3-Star QB from Pratville, Alabama, tweeted out that he was committed to UK. Whitlow was committed to Arkansas St., but has switched to the Cats. That is the same type of school that LSU and Bama go up against right? Now UK is never ever going to go toe-to-toe with LSU, Bama, Florida, Auburn, etc. for recruits. UK just cannot compete at that level. However, when they are at their best, UK could recruit against Ole Miss, Miss. St., Missouri, maybe even Tennessee because they are down. Beating out Arkansas St. isn’t exactly to write something home about.
To recruit at a higher level, Joker has to be able to hold onto the in-state talent that comes up every so often. Letting guys like Lamar Dawson get away just cannot happen. When UK was at their best in recent history, (think Burton, Tamme etc.), they had good in-state talent. Kentucky doesn’t produce a ton of football talent though, which is the problem. If Joker can maybe steal a player once in awhile, as he did with Daryl Collins from Alabama, and pick up some players other schools may have passed over, UK might be able to do OK. Otherwise, we could be in for a long run of beating out Arkansas St. and the equivalents.

Tony
It’s nice when you occasionally score a Randall Cobb in the rough, but for the most part, these guys aren’t gonna get it done in the SEC. Same ‘ol, same ‘ol.
Todd
Crying over spilled milk here: If we had fired the joke & hired Mike Leach, we could go head to head with the big boys periodically for top offensive recruits.
Look guys, it doesn’t matter who we recruit. Joker couldn’t win the SEC with a nfl pro bowl roster. Joker & Barney need to go after our upcoming 3 win season.
You’re right Tony, same ol, same ol.
Alright Joker defenders, blast away at me.
Drew
Right or wrong, Joker has to have a third year. Firing him after 2 years would set a bad precedent for whoever takes the job next. Let’s not pop open the Kristal yet for Daryl Collins, either, until he proves why Nick Saban offered him an Alabama greyshirt. UK history is full of “studs” breaking down, getting injured, or being VASTLY overrated (Aaron Boyd, anyone?) Let’s hope Jalen is Randall Cobb Light, because we’ll never see another Randall Cobb in our lifetimes. Welcome aboard, Jalen!
Todd
If that’s your rationale then should BCG have gotten a 3rd year?
Drew
No. College football and college basketball are universes apart, which I know you understand. College football players take at least two years to develop, either as true freshman or redshirt freshman. Basketball players can come in and contribute immediately, which Coach Cal has done better than anybody else. BCG’s off-the-court problems not withstanding, basketball teams can improve quickly. Plus, recruiting to the winningest all-time basketball program with tons of history is WAY easier than recruiting to a college football with little tradition, fewer resources, in the strongest conference in the country. Look, I was on the fence with Joker going into the UT game. He’s got to have another year. If he got the pink slip, we’re telling the next guy he doesn’t even have three years to get challenged UK pogram closer to being a better SEC team. Additionally, getting a high-profile coach to UK hoops is WAY easier than a UK football coach. Just my two cents worth.
Todd
Joker did manage to steal one from Bama. Taylor, a running back.
Drew
THAT’S the kind of player UK has to have to keep climbing the ladder. I heard Ralph Andrades, a high 3 start out of Florida, wanted to come to KY but UK decided to stick with AJ Legree. Andrades signed with Florida. That’s got to be good news…right?
