UK Hoops Stay Perfect In the SEC, Beat Bama

In front of another sold out crowd in Memorial Coliseum, the UK Hoops team stayed undefeated in conference play by beating an SEC winless Alabama team, 82-68.  Keyla Snowden led the way for the Cats with 14 points, and A’dia Mathies was right behind her with 13.  The buzz is getting loud in Lexington for the ladies, as they will stay in the top 10, and have a solid lead in the SEC.

This game had the potential to get real ugly if you’re a Bama fan, but to Alabama’s credit, they fought hard till the end.  Foul trouble nearly got the best of the Cats, with Maegan Conwright fouling out, and A’dia Mathies having 4 (at one point Samarie Walker was reported to have 4, but the official box score says only 3).  Alabama nearly got the game to single digits with several minutes to go in the second half, and if Mathies would have picked up her fifth foul the Cat’s would have been in trouble.  But she didn’t.

The defense for Kentucky came out in the first half and did what it always does by forcing several, 17 in fact, turnovers.  But the second half was a different story when Kentucky seemed to lay down a bit on defense and only forced 8 turnovers.  Alabama was also able to score 44 of their 68 points in the paint and as you will see in his post game interview, head coach Matthew Mitchell was none too pleased.

It was cool seeing all of the female student athletes get recognition at the half (check out the pictures posted on Twitter).  Valerie Still was also in the house to get honored with her 81-82 team.  Tony will have more on that later.

Kentucky extends their record to 20-2, 9-0, and sits firmly at the top of the SEC.  They have Ole Miss coming to town on Thursday at 7 pm before they hit the road to take on LSU.  The Ole Miss game could become the typical trap game for the Cats, but the good news is the fact that it is at home, a place Kentucky hasn’t lost this season.

Stay tuned as we get the post game interviews loaded up as fast as YouTube will let us.
