Let me begin by saying this post’s title will be the first and ONLY time I’ll ever mention Ole Miss’s new mascot by name. Politically incorrect or not, Ole Miss will always be the Rebels to me and the rest of the SEC. It’s ridiculous they had to change their mascot. The name they chose is even worse. Seriously, is Oxford and the state of Mississippi dealing with a bear overpopulation problem? How did I miss this? WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN? If Rebels is off limits or frowned upon, I’ll use the mascot Ole Miss SHOULD’VE chosen—the Admiral Ackbars, without question the most underrated Star Wars character in history.
Thanks for letting me vent. I feel better. Anyway….
The Lady Wildcats doubled-up Ole Miss 82-41. The last time I saw a score this lopsided was when I kicked my college roomate’s ass in Tecmo Bowl. In his defense, I had Bo Jackson. Kentucky forced 36 (that’s not a typo) turnovers and completely overwhelmed Ole Miss the entire game. Bria Goss continued to sharpen her SEC Freshman of the Year resume’ with 19 points to lead Kentucky. A’dia Mathies struggled from the field, shooting only 2-14, but still put up 11 points after connecting on all 6 of her free throws. Samarie Walker continued to be the muscle in the paint this team needs, netting 11 points and grabbing 6 rebounds. Kentucky outrebounded Ole Miss to the tune of 45-38. In all honesty, this game’s outcome was never in doubt. Even with Ole Miss clinging to an early first half lead and shooting 52% from the field, UK’s defense was downright stifling. It was a matter of time before things got out of hand.
Coach Matthew Mitchell’s Lady Wildcats hit the road for Baton Rouge for a Sunday afternoontilt with LSU. Game time is set for 3pm. With Tennessee’s loss at home tonight, Kentucky now holds a two game lead for the SEC regular season championship. Keep it up, ladies. I’m smelling championship banners and a #1 seed.
