At this point most believe the National Player of the Year race is a two man race and I have to agree 100%. Anthony Davis and Thomas Robinson are a step above the rest and I have to agree with Dick Vitale that Davis is the leader. Robinson has had a GREAT year and there is no question he has been able to answer all of the questions his critics had about him. When you hear his story and all that he has been through you have to think he is a kid with tremendous drive. He is a great story and I think he certainly deserves a lot of respect for the year he has had on the court as well as personally.
Robinson is the favorite for many in the media and for many that will be voting. His play gives them great reason to have him listed at the top but there is more to it than that. Robinson is a junior and a kid that has paid his dues. He has gone through many struggles on and off the court to become one of the best players in the NCAA this year. Robinson has good numbers to support his play which has taken the early struggles of Kansas all the way to #5 in the current polls. He is averaging 17.1 points, 12.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.1 steals, 1.2 blocks per game and 2.7 turnovers per game. He is shooting 54.6% percent from the field and 69.4% from the free throw line. Those are really good numbers and his team only has 5 losses on the year.
Robinson’s argument for POY….He is a junior has been around the block a couple of times. He plays for a top ranked team. He has really good numbers on the year. He has overcome A LOT to be where he is.
Let’s look at Anthony Davis and what he has done in his freshmen year. Davis is averaging 14.0 points, 9.9 rebounds, 0.9 assists, 1.5 steals, 4.9 blocks and 0.9 turnovers per game. In addition to those numbers he is shooting 65.1% from the field and 70.6% from the free throw line. Davis leads the nation in blocks and has been breaking records nobody’s business. As Dick Vitale said earlier today when Anthony Davis steps on the court he is automatically worth 15 points.
Davis’ argument for player of the year….He has dominated the game to say the least. He changes the way the other team plays against UK. Players do not have the freedom to drive against UK and it allows the Cats to pressure players on the perimeter. Davis plays for THE top ranked team and he is a big part of why they are #1.
Arguments against both players……
Robinson is one of the best players but not the best. Most of the people who will be voting had their vote cast on Robinson last month.
Davis is the best player in the country but he is a freshmen. He also plays at Kentucky for Coach Cal.
I do think the race is close this year and I think Robinson and Davis are the two best players in college basketball this season. In the end its hard to deny a player who has changed the way other teams have to play against him. Other coaches make their game plan around Davis and I’m not sure anyone can argue that for Robinson.
